THE INFLUENCE OF HANDLING OPERATIONS ON THE QUALITY OF ALUMINA IN ALUMINIUM PRODUCTION

de Silva, S.R. and Enstad, G.G

Alumina used in the manufacture of aluminium is subjected to a very large number of handling and transport operations: from bulk ships to quayside silo storage, from quayside to manufacturing facility, through fluorine recovery systems and, finally, to the reduction cells. This study, carried out at six major production plants in Norway, determined that poorly designed storage silos probably contributed more to variations in quality than the handling operations themselves.
