A NEW PROCEDURE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF ALUMINA, CAUSTIC AND CARBONATE IN BAYER LIQUORS

Connop, W.L.

A novel approach to the determination of alumina, caustic and carbonate concentrations in Bayer liquors by potentiometric titration is described. The procedure has distinct advantages over the traditional Watts-Utley technique.

The technique is rapid, precise and is easily automated. It covers a wide range of concentrations and is a superior method for the control and optimisation of alumina production in a Bayer refinery.

In addition, the technique offers further advantages of significant reduction in reagent costs and its simplicity lowers the capital cost of the analytical equipment required.

The technique is fully described and both precision data and comparison data with results obtained by the traditional Watts-Utley procedure are given.
