PROBING THE ALUMINA SURFACE

Hyland, M.M, Shaw, R.W., Rodda, D.P. and Welch, B.J.

This paper describes the use of a surface analytical technique, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, to study important processes which take place at the surfaces of alumina and alumina trihydrate. Three studies will be discussed: (1) the adsorption of sodium and organics on trihydrate surfaces; (2) migration of sodium during the calcination process; and (3) the adsorption of HF on alumina.
