MECHANOCHEMICALLY MODIFIED DISSOLUTION OF KAOLINITES IN INDUSTRIAL SPENT BAYER LIQUOR

Szabados, M; Kása, E; Baán, K; Sipos, P

Kaolinite is one of the main sources of silica contamination, which dissolves into the Bayer solution and reacts with sodium aluminate to form various desilication product - DSP. Precipitation of DSP causes a number of technical problems in the operation of heat exchangers and transport tubes, thus their control has long been the subject of much attention. Our main objective was to investigate whether the mechanochemical, heat or their combined pre-treatments of kaolinite particles could have an effect on the DSP formation process. We also aimed to investigate the structural changes caused by the various treating and to find a correlation between altered physico-chemical properties and kaolinite dissolution.
