LABORATORY INSTRUMENTATION AT THE WORSLEY ALUMINA REFINERY

Connop, W.L. and Morton, R.A.

The analytical requirements at Worsley Alumina have led to an instrument based, highly automated process control laboratory. An overview of the methods and instrumentation will be described.

These instruments play a vital role in maintaining product quality by allowing the process to be monitored and thereby optimised to achieve the desired product quality specifications.

Specifically, the use of Automatic Titrimetric Systems for liquor analysis, Ion-Chromatography for oxalate analysis, Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer for liquor impurities and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer for raw material and product quality determinations are examined. This will include some of the developments initiated at Worsley to further improve the reliability and accuracy of the laboratory instrumentation.
