Siqueira, V. and Chaim, G.A.

The ALUNORTE plant is located 40 km south of the city of Belém, North of Brasil, in the Amazon Region and started operation on the 15th july, 1995. This 1,100,000 tpy plant is based on ALCAN's technology and has incorporated the most advanced technics for low temperature digestion, for mud treatment, for continuous precipitation, for calcination and for plant control. Special effort has been devoted to environment control from the very beginning of the design phase, in view of the difficult equatorial climate.

Solutions applied for liquid effluent control, for mud disposal and for gaseous emissions are described and also the results of the first six months of operation.
