BULK DENSITY MEASUREMENTS OF SMELTER GRADE ALUMINA

The bulk density of alumina within the smelter was found to vary considerably at different points within the handling circuit. This is a source of potential cell control difficulties when volumetric feed systems are used. The changes were found to be from size segregation rather than attrition. The measurements were quite sensitive, very reproducible and offer an additional measure for alumina assessment. The results highlight the importance of the overall size distribution. No correlation was found between the bulk density and the common shipment measures of alpha content and % -45um.
