AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO ORGANICS REMOVAL IN THE BAYER PROCESS

Moody, G.M., Adkins, S.J.and Lee, A.

A number of approaches to the removal of organics from the Bayer Process liquor circuit have and are being practised. Examples of these include liquor burning, chemical precipitation and diverse means of oxalate removal.

Many of the processes which have been proposed present drawbacks such as high treatment costs, partial removal involving only specific organic constituents and the introduction of detrimental side effects to other parts of the circuit.

Certain treatments are identified and a brief review of these is provided. For the main part however, attention is directed towards results obtained from the use of a specific adsorbent which is shown to exhibit benefits not previously identified. The same is considered in the light of alternative application techniques which seem to have potential in providing effective means of controlling the level of organics.
