BINS, SEGREGATION, BLENDING - MANAGING THE PRODUCT BEYOND THE CALCINERS IN ALCOA'S WESTERN AUSTRALIAN OPERATIONS

Lochore, D.J.

Alcoa of Australia's operations in Western Australia represent the world's largest single alumina production and shipping system. In 1987, the system's three refineries shipped over 4.8 million tonnes of alumina, through their portsltes of Bunbury and Kwinana, to a variety of customers world-wide. The various smelter technologies of these customers require emphasis on different product quality parameters.

This paper describes how Alcoa of Australia manages the portsite systems to provide the preferred material for each customer. The issues of size segregation and bin design are discussed, and the operational aspects of the three-refinery, two-portsite blending systems are highlighted.
