TWELVE YEARS FLASH CALCINER PERFORMANCES OF SERVICE TO FUEL SAVING AND HIGH QUALITY IN ALUMINA CALCINING

Alumina rotary kiln modernization firstly brought by FCB in 1972 stood at that time for the best way to significantly lower by about 20% relevant fuel consumption as well as to increase output capacity. Eleven kilns thus converted have been implemented around the world within the last fifteen years, largely demonstrating the technical consistency and reliability of the proposed FCB patented scheme.

But next and decisive breakthrough in alumina calcination field was undoubtebly the commissioning of the first worldwide flash calciner at Aluminium de Grèce alumina refinery achieved by FCB in 1984: a new thought of alumina calcining was born...

This paper points out the updated technical performances of such ADG kiln in terms of alumina quality, energy consumption, reliability, etc..., while highlighting the average operation and maintenance costs, during the last twelve years of continuous smelter grade alumina production.

A review of main improvements brought to new generation of FCB flash calciners is then proposed.
