QAL DIGESTER OPERATOR TRAINING SIMULATOR

Snow, T.G. Magee, T. Matthews, B.

QAL has successfully developed a high-fidelity Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for Digestion CCR Operators to improve the quality of CCR training of infrequent high consequence events such as Digestion Unit start-ups. Due to roster and shutdown schedules, a CCR Operator may go years without performing a unit start-up and during a Unit Start-up there are a variety of operating conditions that could lead to a relief event. The OTS provides the ability for CCR Operators to train on all major process activities such as unit start-ups from cold and empty to fully on-line, unit trip and recovery, digester swaps, flash tank bypass, heater swaps. The project is the first use of Honeywell’s Unisim OTS platform with ABB’s Harmony Training Simulator that emulates the Bailey Infi-90 DCS. The paper presents the key challenges of the brownfield OTS project and methodologies used to develop the OTS. The project was made financially viable by allowing secure remote access for Honeywell Simulation Engineers from India and the US into the OTS Virtual Machine environment at the QAL Refinery.
