For a proposed 2200m3 hydrate storage tank installation no firm basis could be found for mixer design, either from theoretical correlation or previous installations, that would fuly meet the required process performance.

Solids concentration was high (40-55%) and the particle size was coarse (89% less than 180 microns). Since the tanks feed to filters, the discharge concentration was required to be within 5 percentage points of the average in the tank.

The paper describes pilot mixing studies that were conducted to optimise the mixer design and provide a quantitative basis for scale-up to full size tanks.

Full size mixers have been installed and provide the required operating performance.
