DEMONSTRATION TRIALS FOR THE USE OF READYGRIT®.

Alcoa of Australia bauxite residue sand is being transformed into a valuable, marketable and safe product, known as ReadyGrit®. The use of ReadyGrit® has been demonstrated in a range of applications, illustrating that the material’s unique properties result in equal or superior performance over traditional sand materials.

The demonstrated applications included;

• Use as sub-base in road construction, as a replacement for both sub-grade sands and sub-base limestone. This trial was supported by Main Roads, WA.
• Top dressing a recreational sports oval at Fairbridge Village, in association with Fairbridge Western Australia Inc.
• Use as bunker sand on golf courses, in association with Royal Perth Golf Club.
• Top dressing and sanding golf course greens, with support from Kwinana Golf Club.
• Use as fill for industrial land developments, with support from Landcorp and geotechnical assessment carried out by Golder Associates.

The use of ReadyGrit® in these applications was independently assessed for performance and potential impacts to the environment. Outcomes from the trials indicated that ReadyGrit® is a free draining material with very good compaction and strength characteristics and offers benefit to the environment though enhanced nutrient retention compared to other coastal plain sands.
