CALCINATION - THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE REFINER AND SMELTER

Raahauge, B.E.

The calcination of aluminium hydroxide to alumina is the last processing step in the refinery.

Consequently, the technology for design of new and retrofitting of old calciners is very important in helping the refiner to meet the alumina quality demanded by the smelter(s).

This paper will review the experience and technical considerations made by one designer and supplier of calciners, in order to help the refiner produce the "right" alumina quality. In doing so, the lowest possible investment and operating cost per unit alumina capacity must not be sacrificed either.
